Buoyancy & Descents

PADI teaches divers to dive safely. They teach buoyancy by using the fin pivot skill and the hover. This should be enough to get a feel for buoyancy. But their only real guidelines are to add air to your BCD as you descend and to release air from the BCD as you ascend. Is that it?.....
